In significant acts of generosity, trainer Bob Baffert and his wife, Jill, along with jockey Victor Espinoza, announced they will donate to several charities following=inheritAmerican Pharoah's Triple Crown triumph June 7.

The Bafferts will be donating $50,000 each to the following charities: the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), the California Retirement Aftercare Account (CARMA), the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), and Old Friends Farm in Kentucky.

Espinoza, who has actively supported City of Hope for several years, will donate his entire Belmont Stakes presented by DraftKings (gr. I) purse earnings, $80,000, to the nationally renowned cancer research and treatment facility which is located in Duarte, Calif.

I saw this a couple of days ago, and at first I was very impressed.  Espinoza's contribution is great - the entire purse earnings of $80,000 is coming out of his pocket, very generous and heart warming.

On the surface it turns out that the $200,000 "contributions" from the Bafferts was generous, but it's really coming from a cheesy promotion by Burger King.  That isn't Baffert's money, its a promotional fee being paid by Burger King for them allowing their "mascot" to sit in Baffert's box during the race.

Come on Bob, you can do better than that, can't you?  At least don't let people extol your "generosity when you aren't contributing a single red cent.

Why would you say that Victor is paying money "out of his pocket" for donating his share of the winning purse, but that Baffert isn't for donating all his 'share' of the BK fee?
I look at that promotional fee as income for Bob, much like a share of a purse is income for a rider. BOTH Bob and Victor are donating income that they could have banked...in other words, out of their pockets.

I totally agree SB.. if not charity, then it would have been Baffert's money.... I am POSITIVE that IRS would consider it income..

Lord have mercy. I bought a bag full of Burger King burgers last Thursday night and tossed the last one to the crows today. Glad my money is making it to charity.

Passed a ton of vultures feasting in the road this morning during my errands. One whiff of them in the summer makes you sick. Got home and fed the crows a feast of eggs, fish from last night, and cheap dog food I keep for mouse traps. Didn't realize until last week that the chipmunks I chase keep all other rodents away. Watching the races now. It's been a strange week......
Now, about the photo in the first post of this thread. I HAVE DECIDED that is the COOLEST Photo in years. My TC souveneir package consists of a tee-shirt with all 12 TC winners AND THAT PHOTO as a poster. It captures the humbled Baffert, his ever protective wife, and the KING menancing over Bode
