Dettori to Receive 2015 World’s Best Jockey Award

Although it was a close competition for most of the year, Italian-born, British-based jockey Lanfranco “Frankie” Dettori has defeated North America’s Victor Espinoza and England’s Ryan Moore for the title of 2015 Longines World’s Best Jockey.

Dettori won five of the world’s Top 100 Group or Grade 1 races, and four of those—the  Investec Derby, Coral-Eclipse, QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes, and Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe—came aboard Golden Horn, Europe’s Horse of the Year. His other top victory came in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot with Undrafted.

Scoring for the award credits jockeys for finishing in the top three, and Dettori’s mounts also finished second four times and third four times in qualifying races. Dettori had the most top three finishes of any jockey, and it was that remarkable consistency that helped him win the title with a total of 100 points.

Espinoza and Moore tied for second, finishing with 90 points, while France’s Maxime Guyon finished close behind in fourth with 88 points. Moore, who was injured for part of the year, won the inaugural Longines World’s Best Jockey Award in 2014. The full and final standings can be found at www.ifhaonline.org.

Dettori will be recognized at a ceremony held during the gala dinner of the Longines Hong Kong International Races, 11 December 2015 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.  It was a banner year for the rider, who also notched Group 1 victories in such races as the Prix de Diane Longines, Darley Prix Morny, and Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes.

The awarding of the Longines World’s Best Jockey is based upon performances in the 100 highest-rated Group 1 and Grade 1 races as established for the year by the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee. The scoring incorporates races from 1 December of the previous year until 30 November of the current year.  Jockeys accrue 12 points for a win, 6 points for placing second, and 4 points for placing third.

This system and the presentation of the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award were both established in 2014. It marked the first time a jockey was quantitatively recognized as the best among his or her global peers.

Love the Frankie man, but my nod would go to Braulio Baeza!

Braulio Baeza (born March 26, 1940) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey. He began racing in 1955 and in 1960, at the urging of agent Camilo Marin, moved to compete in the United States, where at the Keeneland Race Course he won the very first race he competed in.

Braulio Baeza's success in America was instantaneous. He was the leading money winner in American racing from 1965 to 1969, the 1968 winner of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, and the 1972 and 1975 winner of the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey. During his career, he rode a number of Thoroughbred greats, including Buckpasser, Graustark, Dr. Fager, and Ack Ack. In 1961 he won his first Belmont Stakes. Two years later he rode to his first Kentucky Derby victory on Chateaugay as well as for his second Belmont Stakes win. In 1969 he won the Belmont for the third time on board future Hall of Famer, Arts and Letters.

In 1972 Baeza travelled to York Racecourse in England, where he rode Roberto to victory over the previously unbeaten Brigadier Gerard in the inaugural Benson & Hedges Gold Cup. That same year he went to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada, where he won the prestigious Canadian International Stakes. Baeza was the jockey aboard Foolish Pleasure in the tragic 1975 match race against the great 3-year-old filly Ruffian, who had to be euthanized after she pulled up during the race with a broken front ankle.

Braulio Baeza retired in 1976 after having won 3140 races in the United States. He was inducted that same year into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Keystone made you do it

Laugh..Nooooo,all me Frankie! Although wherever he is I'm sure he wud agree with my assertion of the way the race unfolded. I remember saying out loud during the race,"stay with him baby"! Albarado knew Frankie was glued to him,he kept looking back and I'm sure thinking, Aw s***,Dettoris got me in his sights! He stayed so close to "Curlin" it looked as if he was towing "Ravens Pass'. When Mr. Denman exclaimed,'And here comes Curlin",my thoughts were, and here comes R.P. wit' him! Mr. Stevens who was on the commentators dais  said..,It was a brilliant tactical ride by Dettori,I agree!YesDancing
