Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey's Stephanie's Kitten, winner of the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), failed to sell at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale Nov. 1 for the second consecutive year.

Kenneth Ramsey said he set a reserve of $2,999,000. The 6-year-old homebred mare by Kitten's Joy   brought a final bid of $2.95 million.

"We felt like if she didn't bring (the reserve) we'd keep her and breed her to Tapit   or Galileo or some big European stallion and race the offspring," Ramsey said, noting that Tapit is the most logical choice.

Last year, after Stephanie's Kitten finished second in the Filly & Mare Turf, the Ramseys set her reserve at $3.99 million, but she failed to meet the price at Fasig-Tipton.

Stephanie's Kitten is out of the Catienus   mare Unfold the Rose.

Must be nice to be able to say 'no' to $2.95 Million. That was only $49.5K less than the reserve. On the other hand since Ramsey is a breeder, I am surehe is just as happy keeping her.

Stephanie’s Kitten Sold Privately To Japan

Stephanie's Kitten wins the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Stephanie's Kitten wins the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

According to The Blood-Horse, Ken and Sarah Ramsey struck a deal today regarding the mare Stephanie’s Kitten with Northern Farm of Japan, owned by the Yoshida family.  The Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Champion was sold privately for $2.8 million after being bought back for $2.95 million the previous evening at the Fasig-Tipton November sale.

Mr. Ramsey told The Blood-Horse that he “saw the sale was down last night and that only one horse in the sale brought $3 million, so I thought that was where the market is now and accepted the offer.”

Ramsey had been considering keeping the 6-year-old earner of $4.29 million and breeding her himself, but ultimately accepted the Yoshida’s offer as a “business decision.”  He had offered Stephanie’s Kitten at last year’s Fasig-Tipton November sale, but declined to sell at $3.95 million, and went on to win over $1.6 million with her this year.
